3rd gear redlines (6000rpm) @ 105mph with 3:42 rear gears, ,4th redlines @ 140mph(6000rpm) 3:42 rear gears.. Don't know what gear you are throwing @ 78mph to get to 6th ..5th should be turning about 2500rpm @78mph. My shifting from 5 to 6 is effortless at any speed over 60mph.
Are you pushing the clutch to the floor?

This happened to my 1998, drain and refill your transmission fluid. I used Amsoil ATC and it went away. I had previously used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF for 50,000 miles. These transmissions are sensitive to dirty fluid.
be careful on what fluid you use in the tranny though. 1999 and older T56 have paper blockers. Synthetic fluid will destroy these and the tranny will have to be rebuilt. The only synthetic you can use in those tranies is Ames Oil
