160 Stat install.
Hello everyone.
I have a question for you, My son just gave me a 160 Thermostat and I was wondering the pros and cons on using it, I know how to install it but will it be worth it?
Thanks in advance.
2002 Coupe, Halltech intake. Thats about it for now.
Bill
Yes I didn't mention you will need to program the fans, but you can
can do that with a handheld programmer. Predator ect., whomever said
it is a waste of time and money, evidently has not had a 160 and the fans programed. My car runs around 185 instead of 220+, this not only
effects the water but oil and if an auto the trans temps too.
Please tell me why it is a waste of time and money?
Search for the other discussions on this. There are DOZENS. All you're doing is opening the thermostat sooner, once it's open-it's as open as the stock one is. Reprogamming the fans will do more to lower the temp's if that's what you want to do.

Waste of time and money? Read what you just wrote and try to make sense of how it works. Your exactly right and so your cooling your car down starting at 160 rather then 195. It allows the coolant to flow at lower temps keeping yur engine cooler. How is that a waste of time and money. Of course the fans coming on lower will make the effectivness of the stat even more.
While the thermostat will open earlier with a 160 vs 195, once it opens the coolant will be what it will be depending on ambient air temperature, fans on/off settings, road temperature, radiator/water pump/hoses condition, coolant condition, pressure cap, driving manner, etc...
It's your car to do with as you please.
I have been considering the same thing as my tuner has told me he can program in more timing if the temp is down, my biggest concern is oil temps when it is cool outside.

That's NOT what's going on. The thermostat is only opening a little sooner-it won't ever be at 160 for very long. The thermostat only keeps the coolant in the engine, once it's open and the temp is above the opening temp-there is no difference between the 160 and the 190. It's AIRFLOW after that that determines what temp the engine is running at. Again-the a 160 degree thermostat is a waste of time-especially if you use it as a DD in a old environment-You'll have to wait longer for heat.
