I would get at least a cam in the 224/224 area as stated above as it will not effect drivability. I'm a fan of the bigger cams but that's just me. Remember drivability is all in the tune.
I'd recommend some head work to go with your Cam. Increasing duration will lower your nominal compression ratio making your bottom end soggy. My heads CC's to a CR about 9.2:1 from the factory so I had them shaved to get 10.25:1. I went with a LS6 cam but wish I had gone more. Oh, and don't forget high perf valve springs and push rods.
Totally agree--it is a huge project to remove all the stuff in order to get the old cam out--It would be a wasted effort as I'm pretty sure you wouldn't think it was enough--Remember the 55 additional HP on a Z06 over an LS1 is done with more than just the camshaft--The Z06 also has better exhaust---better intake manifold--better exhaust manifold--better heads--The cam only plays a small part of the total increase---advice about cam selection above is all good -IMHO
