Last night I was driving home under normal conditions and shifting into 6th, felt a kick in the clutch pedal accompanied by a fairly loud sound. Everything functioned ok, but the clutch felt a little stiffer. When I got home, I found half of a broken spring on the floor. There is a spring behind the clutch pedal - and mine is now broken.
Anyone else had this problem or know what the purpose of the spring is? Strange that it actually feels more stiff now that it is not functioning properly??
Thanks all - guess I'll be heading to the dreaded dealer when they re-open.
I broke that same spring in my 01Z. It's a clutch assist spring and it's there to make the clutch easier to depress. There are threads on the forum that recommend removing that spring if you are having pedal sticking problems with the clutch. As long as you don't mind the additional effort it takes to depress the clutch, you don't need it. I haven't replaced the one in the Z and it's been out for 12 track days since I removed the spring. Make sure you remove the other half of the spring if you're not going to replace it.
