I had been running an Exide Orbital (an AGM battery, the only thing I will run in my C5) for the last 5 years until it died (I got back $50 under warrenty). I got it at SAMS CLUB and now they no longer carry it. They carry Optima's.
I decided on an Optima Red Top over the yellow because:
1) It has a much longer warrenty
2) I use a battery tender on my daily driver whenever it sits more than 2 days.
3) I don't use the deep discharge feature (i.e. no playing stereo with car not running, etc)

I have an 02'. I have the D34 78-950 yellow top. This battery has been great for almost 4 years now. It ran completely down, over night once because of a bad flasher switch, car didn't even have enough juice to unlock the doors. I gave it a slow charge for about and hour, and that was it. No problems since. I don't run my stereo with the car off but I do have a 1000w system in the car? Good enough to hear the music at 75 - 80 with the windows down
Yellow Top would be needed if you ran a lot of accessories otherwise the red top is good enough.
I have found with the Red top it needs to be put on a battery tender if it is going to be sitting long between start ups.
yep...seems that when I had the Red Top in my 99 if the car sat a week or more the battery was weak same thing with the 02. I now have an Interstate battery in the 99 for a year and no issues so far. The 02 battery just seems to be getting progressively worse. I guess we will decide if its worth the extra $$$
I've gone through 2 yellow top in my C5 in less than 2 years! Two Blue tops in my Mustang. Optima/Orbital they are all hit or miss! They don't make them like they use to!
I have the yellow top due to a big custom stereo...and its awesome...
a bit heavier,,,but well worth it. get a trickle for the winter..and have not had a single issue with it.
Part # D34/78-950 Optima Yellow Top in my 2002...$140 at Advance Auto July 2007. The Red Top I had only lasted 10 months. Advance took back the Red, & I paid $30 difference...good deal! Yellow tops hold their charge longer over non-use periods than Reds...we'll see?
