My C5 mechanic told my he just replaced the rings on a 2001 Z06. He said he thinks the problem is that they use chrome Alloy rings and that they need to be seated properly. His theory is that some folks don't drive the car hard enough in the beginning to seat the rings. Accoding to him these hard rings must be hammered pretty good to seat.
I have regularly driven to redline since my car hit the 1st 500 miles. No abnormal consumption here.
Re: Possible cause for bad rings.....hmmmm (chuckster)
Chuk, IT used to........still may, from the GM tech bulletin, the # 2 ring is a 9# pressure ring, and at certain RPM's it is "Fluttering", , I take that to mean it's not got enough tensile expansion to keep it in contact with the cylinder walls........
For this reason they went to a ring with 13#'s tensile pressure for the fix, and a different design on the lip........a napier design.....whatever that is.......
Bottom line, the rings do not have enough OUTWARD pressure to keep a proper seal on the piston to cylinder wall ................So, oil is allowed past them, and viola!!!!!!!!!........out the exhaust she goes.
Or, so was the tale from the GM fairies.................. :cry
