Headed out to work this morning, got less than a block from the house, warning "Right rear tire flat, max speed 55 mph, reduced performance" came on. Turned around, went home, checked air, 28.5 psi. WTF? Pumped to 34 psi. Started, message did not return. Tire pressure showed correct value per my digital handheld gauge.

Went out at lunch, same thing. Pressure shows 34 psi. Turned off, started up, message did not return.

Is this a TPS battery failure symptom or ??? Don't understand why it shows the correct pressure but thinks it is flat. It was cold as an ex-wife's heart this morning and I noticed a little flat spot on the tires, but only the RR alerted about the flat. Is there a "thump" sensor that interprets flat spotting as a flat regardless of TPS reading?

I just had that happen to me yesterday. But after about 5 minutes of driving it went away. Never happened before.

Now THAT's spooky. Was it really cold yesterday? I guess cold is relative. Are you in Kuwait?

Your 1998 uses Series I sensors, they last about 7 years or 100,000 miles.

Yours may be on their last legs, and cold weather affects battery output. Driving raises tire temperature and pressure.

TPSs read only pressure, the computer does adjust according to altitude (per barometric reading).

BTW, a flat tire is only flat on the bottom (until damaged by driving), a "thump sensor" would not work.
