Default Door Keys different than Ignition Keys?

I unplugged my battery and had to reprogram my Key FOBs and I got a little nervous cause I realized I don't have my door keys for the vette... This is my first vette and I didn't notice the Ignition keys didnt work in the door. Are the keys different from Ignition to lock? If so I need to get a manual key in case my FOBs stop working..

Is it cheap to get a key made? Where do I get one made?

THanks!

Josh

only one key for both, i bought my key blank off *-*ay you have to know what Vats code(computer Chip key) is in ur key, i think there is 14 or 15 differant codes. then took it to the dealer to get cut....

Supposed to be the same key but it is possible the door or ignition lock was replaced with a different key. This should not have been done but it is possible.

Default Update your profile what year is your car

All C5s I know have the same door, ignition, glove compartment and console key. The ignition uses the VATS resistor pellet to see that you are not using a fake to start the car. Can get VATS keys on fleebay for a LOT cheaper than from the dealer or a locksmith. Search for double sided VATS keys and you will see pleanty of them. Most adds there give you a chart to tell which VATS key pellet you need. Use a DVOM to check the resistance. NOW is the time to have a spare not when you misplace the key. I purchased mine online and had a local locksmith CUT the keys. Don't go to Kmart or Home Depot and have some novice ruin your $5 to $10 investment. BIGHANK

Huh ?????

To get a key made as described above, YOU ALREADY HAVE TO HAVE A WORKING KEY .......

You need the working key to measure the resistance of the pellet, and you need a working key to get the matching "notches" cut into the blank.

You can get a key from a Chevy dealer just by bringing in the VIN from the vehicle .... HOWEVER ..... a dealer will demand proof of ownership (here in CA the "pink slip") and photo identification to show you are the legal owner of the vehicle before they will give you the key.

yea, hows that? I've been a cop for 20 years and 90% of car's are stolen without keys....the other's taken are cars that are left running or towed away....every time you take ur car for service or mods you leave ur key with someone, that can go get a key made. easier that ordering 15 different vats and getting the right cut!

What are you talking about???? Getting a blank with the correct VATS code doesn't make your door open or the car start!!! It still has to be cut by a lock smith or a dealership. They get the cutting codes from GM by using your VIN number. How experienced with cars and their mechanical capabilities are you??

I got my VATS number from the dealership, then ordered the key off the net and had lowes cut the key. I think it cost me like 30 for the whole deal, stealership wanted 250.
