My car rattles really bad during idling. The noise is definitely louder and more noticeable if AC is on. But as soon as I press down (disengage) the clutch pedal, the noise is gone. And when the clutch pedal is released, the rattling noise is back again.

I think I have the same sound in my new 2002. On mine it seems to be coming from the tranny. When I release the clutch I can hear the rattle, it is most noticeable when I am idling. I spoke with my service advisor and he said that it was normal, that I needed to watch the video and it will explain it. I haven't watched the video yet but I don't think he is right. Sounds like something is loose. Is this kinda what you are talking about????
Tuan- I've noticed this same condition on mine since I got it. Maybe it's become a little louder on yours since the cam install...from the lope at idle. I agree with JM, it's coming from the torque tube/tranny.
I think this is different from the metal grinding noise when car takes off in first gear and the RPM is too low.
Do you have a lumpy cam? If so - it could be the exhaust rattling in the back or underneath the car.. It happened to me.. :D
That's normal. Try releasing your clutch slowly. This method often works.
It's the throw out thingy on the clutch. Bloody anoying isn't it. We have all got it. Welcome to the club. :yesnod:
hey tuan...I heard it right after the cam install. It sounded like it was coming from the rear of the car. I'm thinking it's the exhaust. Bring it by and we'll poke around until we find it.

ExploreMine does the SAME THING. If I push in the clutch the noise is gone... Otherwise it makes the sound. I was told it was the throw out bearing.

According to the video, it is the linkage in the manual tranny....now my neighbor was told it will improve over time, but is normal. I have an A4 so I cannot comment.

One more for "totally normal".
I've got it on my M6 2001 C5. Had it on both my M6 1996 Z28/SS and M6 2000 Camaro SS. Point being, If you've got our M6/Clutch assembly, you've got "the rattle".
Personally, I end up standing on the cluth all the time, because I find it not only annoying... but embarassing. Nothing like that nice rattle eminating from my $45,000 car in the drive thru line. :crazy
Ah well, I think they call it.. the joys of ownership. Welcome to the club. lol :razz

I have the same problem. I just got my heads and cam done and I did not notice the rattle at first. Then a week later I got my Cartek clutch installed and then I immediately noticed the rattling at idle. I called CarTek and they told me it was normal but bring it in so they can make sure it is nothing else.
They said because of the bigger cam I'm getting the vibration from the torque
tube. Really annoying. I feel like the car is falling apart. When I engage the clutch the noise goes away. My only problem is I didn't hear the noise before the clutch install even with the New Cam. Now it is there. Something needs to be tightened up.

Rick: You're correct. The sound was coming from the rear of the car.
Guys, thanks for all the reponses. I feel much better now. It scared me there for a second because I thought something was wrong with the clutch. I can't afford a new one yet, gotta wait until the bill for the CAM is paid off :D

That is "normal" according to GM, caused by the gears rattling on the mainshaft due to the insufficient damping of the low viscosity automatic transmission fluid used. That was done to reduce drivetrain losses to gain 0.2 MPG. What a joke. I think it is unacceptable in any car at any price, nevermind the technology showcase car of GM. It is not and "inherent characteristic of a front V8, rear transaxle design" that GM claims. Tens of thousands of Porsche 928s have this configuration, and NO transaxle gear rattle!! (They use normal gear oil in the gearbox).

Please enlighten us.....does this mean we can switch the gear oil to get rid of the noise, permanently? That is "normal" according to GM, caused by the gears rattling on the mainshaft due to the insufficient damping of the low viscosity automatic transmission fluid used.
