The C6Z06 shifter is a nice option for a daily driver.
The Hurst/B&M shifters are more precise and have a more postitive stop and centering springs but require more shift effort.
My C5 is a DD in the summer and I went for the C6Z06 unit. The **** is very comfortable, fits the hand nicely, and the shift action is improved. It is not a night and day improvement, but worth the money...Gene Culley has a good price on them and is great to work with. (GMPartshouse)
Better: C6 (Z06) shifter (smooth and decent throw length) or Hurst, BPP, Ripper, etc (super-short throw, but requires some muscle to place in or pull out of gear)
Best: Hurst, BPP, or Ripper with detent spacer washers in-place (best of both worlds with super-fast shifts and fairly easy place-in and pull-out of gear effort)

I have the Hurst and got used to the shift effort pretty quickly. I bought a CTS-V a few months ago and it has a stock shifter. Going back and forth between the two cars always reminds of the difference in shift effort and higher precision (at least that is my perception) of the Hurst.
I two have been looking for a short shifter for my 97 c5 6spd. Have been looked a long time. I am going to go with MGW shifter. They have a 25% or 35% shifter. I am going with the 35% shifter. Had to wait till after new year, stock shifter **** fits. Look up MGW shifters. I think u will go them. And there will be alot of used b&m rippers,hurst,etc.....For sell soon..........
C6Z shifter and ****!!!! I HATED my hurst shifter and actually just threw it away when i took it out. Put in the C6Z and I luv it. So its got a little longer of a throw, ill still outshift anyone i know. Gotta love GM factory parts back in the car.
I just put in my B&M Sport Shifter a week ago. For a while it felt a little stiff but after a few days it really wasn't bad at all. I don't think it requires that much more effort than the stock shifter..
I've used alot of different shifters in various cars over the years and this is not bad at all. Removing the top rubber mount really firmed up the feel, and the length changes the throw to just about right. The nice thing about it is you can try it for free and buy an aftermarket if you don't like it.
I really liked the C6 shifter too but the **** just didn't seam to match the C5 to me.
I first cut the stock shifter down on my 2000 FRC about 1 3/4" and thought this was definately an improvement and was free. Then I bought a 99 vert with a Hurst already in it and I liked it a lot better than the 2000 just the way it was. It is a close ratio tight shifter and notches into gear well. So I got rid of my modded stock shifter in the 2000and had the Kirban installed because I heard it was really good. Too tall for my tastes so I cut it down approx 1 3/4" and added a round aftermarket shift **** and now I like it. Super short throw, definately takes more muscle to shift, but I can beat on it and have fun. Bottom line is you really need to feel the different shifters to figure out what suits your tastes the best. Everyone's different.
