Default SQUEALING Pulley?

My 2000 6-speed convertible has an awful sqeal or squeak that changes with engine RPM. I do not think it is the belt. Has anyone else here ever had something like this happen in their 'Vette? I opened the hood and tried to locate it to no avail. Any ideas about what I am up against?

Yes! I did and it turned out to be my AC Tensioner Pulley as well as the Idler Pulley!

I replaced it and it is all gone now!

The pulley's bearings got dry and started to grind!

Take a can of WD-40 -be careful- and get down ther with the supplied traw and give the pulley bearing (center) a shot and the idler pulley a shot of WD-40.

Do not spray the wheel or belt - just spray the center as it will pull it into the bearing and quiet it down, which will be a temp soloution but will identify the culprit!

Thanks,Matt

Is this a labor-intensive or expensive repair?

Sometime it IS just the belt. Replace that before you go spending any real money.

That said, mine had a recurring squeak and I ended up replacing every tensioner and pulley, but it kept coming back. It wasn't until I replaced the harmonic balancer that it quit for good.

One or both could be the culprit, bearings go bad.

Napa has stock replacements for ~ $15 and $18, as well as better than stock replacements for ~$17 and $20 respectively.
