Hey guys I recently picked up a P0101 code for my MAF I was wondering if there are any common reasons as to why. I cleaned my MAF with the MAF cleaning spray and checked the connection and all looked fine. The car has not running very well for a while now after cam install. My problem is under low PRM high load situations where I get backfiring and it stutters and seems to be missing on itself. In WOT or even 50% or more throttle it seems fine. I did a search and read for more than an hour so I have some direction to head in for that at least but I want to get this MAF situation taken care of first. Any good way to tell if the MAF is still working properly? I have access to EFI live.
You can log the MAF output and see it on the display. You live close to BILLDOG350. Give him a call or PM him and he will HOOK YOU UP! Hes a GOD when it comes to EFI Live and tuning stuff!!
If you clear the code does the engine run better? Once cleared, does it come right back?
If you disconnect the MAF and run the car in SD mode, does it run better? Bill Johnson can show you how to do all that.
You'll get responses from guys with a lot more indept knowlege of this, but just off the top, those were the exact symtoms I had after the drive home form my cam install (no tune yet) It smoked one of my O2 sensors and I had no low rpm drivabilty, but at hwy speeds or WOT it would haoul butt It did set an O2 code however.
I too got this code consistently after installing a big cam. I also experienced the same occasional shuddering effect as the engine stumbled when this code was thrown.
If you have EFI Live, bump up the "MAF rationality Test" (C2911) table by 200% or so. This table is listed in the Diagnotstics > MAF section.
This is strictly a diagnostic table, it will not effect how the car runs (well, it will actually, as in it won't stumble anymore because the code will no longer set ). Upping the values only means you are allowed a greater difference between actual MAF airflow values, and calculated airflow values (which uses the MAP sensor to determine) before setting DTC P0101.
I made the exact change I suggested above on my car, and the code has never reappeared.

Bill I am Patrick, Billdogs friend he called you the other night concerning by backfire problems, in fact I am probably going over his house tomorrow to clean grounds lol. I am the guy in the black C5 coupe that was with you guys at the last track day at LVD.
Anyway no when I clear the codes it runs no better.
The code does not come right back but it does come back pretty much the next time I turn the car on.
In terms of turning the MAF off to run better thats unsure. I havent gotten in touch with Bill today at work (he must be busy) but I am not 100% sure we turned the MAF completely off the other night. We may have to disconnect it to be 100% sure its not operating.
To Bottle fed its not my 02's that cause the backfire issue since it was still doing it even when the 02's where disabled and we were tuning with solely a wideband.
I am just wondering if the MAF is shot. Bill has another one just in case that might work. On Saturday I will have to convince him to hook the laptop back up to the car and really look at the MAF readings. However I do remember that when we were logging with the MAF latter on that night it was really jagged and not a smooth line. He compared it to his logs and although we saw similar numbers through our MAFs my seemed askew.
Is your COT (cat over temp) function disabled? Turning mine off caused this same P0101 code and it produced the same poor running conditions you describe.

I dont know off hand I will have to check my file. Thanks
