C&D Article,Re:Top Speed???
While at the C&d website I read the following:
"Despite the hardtop's improved acceleration numbers, Chevy says it is not as aerodynamic as the coupe-the steeper slope of the hardtop's rear window creates some drag-inducing turbulence. Our tests confirmed that: Flat out, the hardtop hit 169 mph, whereas our most recent slant- backed coupe went 171 mph and earlier editions made it to 175 mph."
I had a '99 FRC that was stock except for a K&N airfilter and Corsas that did an indicated 175 and was still accelerating, ever so slowly. My Z06 has hit the rev limiter twice at 177 indicated.
That dog won't hunt. I don't buy anything less than 170 mph. I had mine (2000HT)up to 165 & she was still pulling, K&N filter & cat backs only. Most top speed quotes, measured, use averages of opposite runs to take out wind, so I'm not sure that would contribute.
The Z06s have lower top speed due to the gearing in the 'top speed gear of 5th' being higher numerically that even the extended rev band cannot make up for. Even though FRC is less aerodynamic the Z06s have the power if geared right to hit 175 mph and probably 180 mph on the '02 Z06. You can rest assure that the '02 Z06 when it hits 168mph, it will be able to hold it even in a slight upgrade in the road.
