I just got a 3.43 rear diff for my 01 A4 and ordered a Yank SS3200 torque converter. I started wondering with the higher stall over stock which means more slipping, do I need a trans cooler now?

Yes ! it is preferrable to keep the temp down, you will also need a tune.
You will love this set up.

Also, I think the gear set is a 3:42.

It is recommended, but not needed for street or dragstrip use. Roadcourses, absolutely. There are plenty of people here running 3200's without any extra cooler. Slippage is pretty minimal.

Anything higher than 3200, and I'd think it would be a must. With that said, when I get mine installed I'll have the cooler as well.

the general rule of thumb is that once you go over 2500 rpm stall, you should use an external cooler.

Though for street-only use, you may get away without having to install one. The key is to keep tranny temps below 200 degrees in all circumstances (although some may claim the "concern" temp is 220).

Granted, you won't get a DIC warning until about 290 degrees (if I remember the limit correctly)... but premature wear will begin at temps between 200 and the 290 warning point.

But how many people upgrade to a 2800 or higher stall... that are street-only drivers ?

Thanks for the replys. The car is a street car only. I ponder the use of such a high stall for street use but Dave at Yank said that would be a great converter stall speed for my current and future HP needs.

The Yank SS3200 and 3:42's is a GREAT combo by the way. You will want a trans cooler for sure. It's cheap insurance for your trans .

I run a 2800 VIG & have a cooler. The car never has & never will see the strip while I own it. I did 3.90's & the stall/cooler "just in case I need it on the street"

With a proper tune the stall converter runs cooler--but as mentioned it is cheap insurance so best is to add one--Pro & cons to bypassing the stock radiator trans cooler when installing the extra cooler-I tried it both ways and mine runs cooler with the radiator cooler bypasssed--
Have your tuner adjust the PWM table to 90/100--Max out the misfire tables-- Sometimes the TQ management has to be deleted if it is missing shifts and hitting the rev limiter--set the base trans pressures back to stock--

To due any tuning here in Utah I sent my PCM to Charlie at RPM for a tune when I put my Long tue headers on. I don't know if I have to send it back to him. I'll have to call. Thanks for all the info guys. I should have everything installed by next weekend. The Dave at Yank sats it takes about a week to build one.

Add one more to the count.
I put in the 3:42's w/a Yank2800. Only street,.... so far. No cooler yet. Highest temp I have seen so far is 205. I may go to the track this year and then I will need the cooler.

There seems to be alot of people that drive there cars on the street with higher than 2800 stall converters. I read your post about having a specific goal for your car. I have a vision for my car and a 3200 stall fits that vision.
