This is a question that has been unanswered for too long imo. Tell us how often you powershift, if at all. And I'm talking about no lift shifts, just some quick clutch manipulation...no speed shifting.
I do on the 1-2 and the 3-4 when racing, still have the stock shifter so I am not really comfortable w/ a 2-3 powershift yet. Only had the car 2 months though, so I am sure that will change. Especially when I get a B&M Ripper :yesnod:
Ben- yeah, you're gonna really like the B&M if you have issues with the stock shifter not working to your expectations between 2nd and 3rd. The centering spring is so tight that all you'll have to do is push up and it'll go ito 3rd.
As an ex-professional drummer, my speed shifts are very fast and clean and not at all abusive. Most people who powershift are ham-fisted oafs whose shifts are slower than mine, with more wheelspin at the upshift. Example: Watch the SMOOTH drivers in autocross. They go faster than the guys who slide around, burning clutches and rubber. Don't confuse violence and abuse with speed.
No question power shifting is more dangerous than a good speed shift but there is a gain on the drag strip. I have probably 1000+ power shifts in my car.(so far so GOOD) If you drive your car hard parts will wearout faster, that is the price you have to be willing to pay to try to get the last .001 out of it. I do see how the A4's guys have an advantage. I usually find my self enjoying to pull to red line that I bump into the rev limiter. If this was a competition (on the track of course) I'd probably get my clock cleaned by an A4 while he was adjusting the radio or something with his right foot planted and the computer doing all the work. It takes great skill to master the MN6 (of course I like the envolvement of the MN6) so I'll just keep practicing.
Ben, be MORE concerned on the 3-4................
At least on the 2-3 you have rev limiter protection./
What do you mean? Are you saying he should be concerned about accidentally throwing it back into 2nd?
As for the powershift or not debate, there is a right and a wrong way to do everything. As Powershifter stated, when done right it is worth time at the track. When I do it the car jumps forward instead of nosing over and falling back for a second. It is a performance increase for every shift except 1st-2nd for me. I get too much wheelspin on that shift, sure is fun though. :yesnod:
I find myself powershifting almost each and every day......can't refuse the feeling of powershifting 1-2 and seeing the looks on people's faces when they see me flying down the street at 50 mph with my tires spinning and smokin'........no problems with the tranny/clutch yet!! Of course, I did just upgrade to the new '02 Z06 clutch in anticipation of my future mods.......
C5, yes sir, exactly what I meant.........seems (at least mine) has a propensity to want to go from 3 to 2, instead of 3-4.........NOT a good thing.........
I changed my shift style( tip from PS), and have had no problem since.....but the stock shifter just has too much room to run IMHO.....
I guess I will try to do the PS method next time out.........should mean an extra .5 over what I am gettting now.....esp from 2-3, and 3-4........ :)
Mello, that good huh????????
Changing the tranny fluid.........a biggie also?????.
Hear a lot about B & M, and Kirban.........seems B & M get's the nod.......
I think the Hurst is gonna be a big ......B_U_S_T..........it's got to have MAJOR probs, for it to be delayed as many times as it has.......IMHO
The old saying, "Something is rotten in Denmark", applies here...... :yesnod:
I have not missed a gear yet in this car even w/ the stock shifter. I am very careful when doing so. I just see more room for error on the 2-3 then on the straight back shifts.
Anytime I race in a stick car I speed shift. My motto on anyhting I have ever owned is:
"If it can't take it, I don't want it"
Every 1/4 mile pass I make is speed shifting. Street racing is the same.
My car is a bone stock '02 Z and has gone a 1.92 60' with a 12.350 @ 114 and I have had no problems with missed shifts or shifter problems execpt the first time I tried to race it. I quickly realized it was my technique and not the shifter at fault. I have since modified my shifting technique and have missed no other shifts.
I have power shifted a few times, but am somewhat concerned that it will eat synchros. Since I do not run the quarter I don't see any great advantage, and the cost may not be worth it. :smash:
