Hi Beef, I just added a PAc module to my stereo in order to run an amp so I had to pull the console facia off the dash. At that time I noticed that the ignition ring is held in place with a small screw (I have a 2001). But you have to take off the dash trim first.

so that little ring is held on with a screw from behind?
you'll need to pull both pieces of the center console first. I done this lots of times. My black bezel is broke and moves a little bit - I just ignore it -just to "tighten" it wouldn't be enough to get me to do the work to get at it.
Procedure:
Open center console lid and remove two bolts in the back.
Open little piece of plastic just in front of it.
Loosen the power piece and disconnect the wiring.
Remove the two bolts.
Pull out the cigarette insert under the radio.
You'll see two little black "star" screws - remove.
To the left of the key hole is a little plastic cover that you remove and take out the black screw.
Console pieces are loose now - at the top of the center piece are a couple of plastic snaps be careful not to break them.
Put car in second gear and lift hand brake.
Back center console piece should be moved back as far as you can.
Loosen center piece until it clears the gear shift working it from left to right.
You are ready to "fix" the black bezel!!
Is it worth it? NO!!
and I thought I was the only one to have this problem. I've lived with it since I shortened my shifter a few of months ago but it drives me nuts every time I stick the key in the ignition.
That part, in my parts list, is the "retainer" that "snaps" the ignition lock inside the ignition lock cylinder. If it has failed, your whole lock will pull straight out of the dashboard with the key in the ON position. (Don't try this with the battery connected - you may cause electrical damage to the vehicle - disconnect the battery before messing with the ignition lock).
The part I listed, 2852046, is the black plastic bezel that surrounds the lock cylinder mechanism. It's basically a "trim" item. Inside it, by the way, is wrapped some of the ignition lock wiring, note carefully when you removal the bezel how the wiring is wrapped so you can put the new one in correctly with the wiring.
Based on your description in your post, I believe you are looking for the bezel, rather than the retainer. The good news is, the retainer is about a $1.00 part, so you aren't out a whole lot as you probably already paid for it when you ordered it. The bezel is GM list price of $17.07 but you can probably get it for less from places such as ....
You mention the wire that wraps around the black plastic cover on the ignition. That what I need to find out. How the wire goes on that. I replaced the ignition switch and checked some fuses bc c5 wouldn't start or crank. I found the bcm fuse was broken on the inside of the plastic and the car started right up, however, (all of these worked before all of this)No brake lights, no hazard lights, no blinkers. So far that's all I have noticed. Wth did I do???? Could I have done something wrong putting in the new ignition switch to cause all of that??? I am beginning to feel quite bewildered by it all. Can someone shed some light on this for me??? Thank you!
you dug up a 13 yr old thread, better to start a new thread to get your question answered. I would start checking all your fuses if you replaced the ign switch without disconnecting the battery

Nope, learned right here to unhook the neg battery cable before disassembling anything on the center console, ignition, etc. But I have checked and rechecked the fuses a couple of times. That's how I finally found that the BCM fuse was broken on the inside. But not before I gave myself a few bald spots on my head. It was a great party....Not!!
Maybe that's why no one will answer my questions! I have been wondering why. If I was doing something wrong or had something set wrong to where nobody could reply. Sheesh. Thank you. I will try that.
