This discussion was specific to K&N, but the naysayers feel that paper is far superior to any oil gauze after market type filter media...

I have gone both routes- build your own with a KN 5135 filter and save over $100 ( vs. Blackwing)

Paper is superior- but unless you drive in the desert the KN filters do a great job IMO. I drive in a city- not a lot of dust storms.

I'm not sure about the blackwing, but the new Venom intake
filter that Halltech is using was picked due to the increased
ISO filtration rating. Much better than the original stinger.
The arguement about paper versus oil applicant type doesnt
really bother me. The idea is to have a "cleanable" filter that also
doesnt have the flow restriction like a paper filter. I pull mine once a month and check or clean it, mainly for something to do involving the car.
And I would bet that there are more clogged/dirty paper filters on
cars out there than Cleanable type. The cleanable type also makes
the awareness factor of the filters condition more of a priority.
