took car out today with new 555rs on the rear and had a few pulls were i had some wheel hop, only in first gear. any suggestions would be helpfull. thanks jim
Most likely it is the tires - too cold. Warm them up next time and then hit them. My Firehawks used to do that and then I went to Nitto Invo's and they heat up quickly - no wheel hop.
My car would wheel hop at cooler temps <60*F. Did the same with stock SC tires and Michelin Sports. Then I installed 305/30/19 PS2's, and still had wheel hop. I just finished installing Prothane rear control arm bushings, as I could toe the rear wheels in & out with the car on the hoist with the stock bushings.
I'll find out if the wheel hop is cured once the snow goes away.
I never had wheel hop problems with my nitto 555 dr but I had a 04 z06. you may want to look at your rear shock stiffness and even your rear spring rates are different. But I think it has more to do with your rear shocks.
When the tire and the ground is cold, any tire will give you wheel hop. Even if you warm up the tires, you can still get wheel hop if the ground is real cold. Try to avoid it at all costs or it could end up in a lot of cost (broken differentials).
I found my Goodyear GS-D3's were great tires all summer. When the cold weather hit their performance characteristics changed a lot. Best option is as stated above, check your suspension but for the most part just stay out of it. The consequences are really bad, even on a built differential. I installed a DTE Stage IV last spring and even that unit carries huge warnings from DTE about wheel hop.
Since I replaced the stock z51 shocks on my 01 with Bilstein HD shocks Ii dont have nearly as much wheel hop. I only had 30 k on my stock shocks but the Bilsteins have much better control at all speeds and road types. The HD are SLIGHTLY firmer then my z51 so it was the perfect shock for my needs (no racing, lots of curvy road and interstate travel on some long trips + weekend cruiser). I would say (IMO) if you have 30 to 40k miles on your shocks already replace them with Bilstein HD/Sports or with the C6 z06 shocks. And if you still have WH then try the bushings (or do both at the same time if you can).
I think you will be impressed on how much a new set of shocks will help you in all road conditons/speeds even with only 30K miles on stockers! And it it dont help your WH much you still will be glad you changed them IMO.
thanks for advise guys, i am runing bilstien sports and i will install the prothane control arm bushings. i think most of my wheel hop was from tire temp and being a little to agressive on the gas. also did not check air pressure after having tires mounted, they were at 32 lbs, i dropped it to 28 lbs, give it another shot this weekend. thanks jim.
Sticky tires/suspension/driver mod should help eliminate this problem. I don't really notice any wheel-hop on my car but it's a good idea to get off the throttle right away so you don't kill your diff.

I started to get a lot of wheelhop after I installed the blower, no matter what the tire or road temps were. I installed a DTE transmission brace and it instantly went away. Just my experience.
Also, if you just got the tires (ie; brand new) they generally will still have the mold release on them, and will make the surface slighly slick. It wears off fairly quickly, so if they are not new, than this is certainly not the issue. Just a thought.
