Default code 1283 and Tech 2

Had my steering disconnected and the wheel got turned, but i don't know how many times or which direction. Now i have the 1283 and 1288 codes.

Can a Tech 2 zero out the steering angle?

Is there another way of zeroing out the steering?

I could take it apart but i don't know which way/how much to turn.

TIA.

First disconnect the steering shaft from the rack. There is a light blue wire that runs from Pin 6 of the SWPS to Pin 23 of the EBTCM. You need to find a way to check the voltage on that wire without disconnecting it. Then use a DMM with a 10 megohm input impedance to measure the voltage on that line. Once you have a reading turn the wheel until you get a reading around 2.5 Volts DC. This should get the shaft back in proper orientation.

I assume you are talking about the Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil which is located in the cockpit? I had overlooked that issue and agree he should disconnect the coil. Service Manuals specifically warn about damage to the coil if the steering shaft isn't locked in the straight ahead position before disconnecting if from the rack. This brings up the point that he may have already caused the coil to go off center or be damaged if the wheel was turned before he put the car back together, although I would suspect that he would have an air bag warning on the dash if something did happen to the coil. Before playing with the SIR system he should definitely read the appropriate sections in the manual on how to disconnect the coil from the shaft and then recenter it after the steering shaft is centered. Just pulling the system fuse and the coil electrical connector is not going to work.

If you have a Tech 2, you could read the sensor voltage with it. Set it a 2.5 volts then raise the frt tires off the ground and disconnect the steering shaft. Turn the wheels to to point straight ahead and reconnect the steering shaft. That should get you back in phase without worrying about damaging the SIR coil.

Maybe. It doesn't hurt to try this but when he disconnects the steering a second time he should lock it in place before disconnecting it.

thanks for the advice. I'll look into doing the voltage and airbag coil this weekend.
