Ok gents....I recently purchased a 2000 C5 Auto. In the center console there is a switch instead of what I thought was an AC/DC adapter for a cell phone charger or what have you. Instead of a hole for the adapter or charger I have a switch. I don't know if it is after market or standard although I haven't found any other post in reference to this switch? Can anyone tell me what this is for?
A couple of days ago I got in and turned the ignition over and NOTHING....I initiallay thought I was dealing with a dead battery, however after a jump....still nothing. Would not turn over no electronic displays, all gauges read nothing...the radio still worked but nothing else....after checking my fuses for corrosion and beginning to get desperate...I opened the console and flipped the switch and low and behold all of the gauges reset and the car turned over as if NOTHING had ever been wrong??
Anti theft device. It has probably been around since the first car was stolen. In your case it appears that the main power supply ( except to the starter) is routed through the switch
I had one installed after my first C5 was stolen. The police said it was one of a few deterants that really works. Mine shut the starter off.
Love it. Just remember to put it on everytime you leave you Vette.
Ok Fred, Now I'm confused lol. I have a remote that I use to active what I thought was the anti-theft (doors lock and the lights flash and I walk away). This switch which I understand is some kind of "power supply" is to be engaged each time I exit the vehicle? I'm sure you can tell I am not very "vette" savy as this is my first 1.
I have also expirienced starting the engine and then realizing a mile or so down the road that none of the gauges were working, no A/C, no radio....I pull over and flip the "switch" and all is well again. She seems sooo temperamental lol.
the switch isn't corvette related, any car can have one. the idea is to put some kind of a switch in a hidden area. flip the switch and the car won't start. so if you leave your car anywhere hazardous (outside) flip the switch when you leave it. if someone does break in and defeat the ignition lock, the thief will try to start the car but nothing will happen. many may know to look for a kill switch, but you can get creative with where you hide it, or even install more than one. this way only you know the secret to making your car start so no one else can.
I bought a 61 that was a insurance strip out. When I put it back together I could not get the starter to engage- while I was under the dash trouble shooting I found a toggle switch- flipped it and everything was well. Underneath the car the back end was covered with oil. It would appear that he blew a engine- pulled it and the interior-trim etc and turned in a insurance claim. I tracked him down thru the title bureau- and he was really pissed that the insurance company didn't sell the car back to him. They were not that dumb. I found out later-word on the street- that it was going to be ****** from me when they got a chance. Didn't happen.
