I am considering going with a short throw shifter in my 01 vert. I am pretty impressed with the MGW product, but unsure about which one 25% or 35% shorter.
I played around with a 2008 C6 Z06 shifter at the Auto Show in Chicago earlier this week and was not overly impressed. Sure the throws are shorter, but it still felt "sloppy" IMHO. Anyone have comparative experience with these, or the Hurst or B&M for that matter?
My feelings on the C6Z shifter were the same as you. Shorter than stock, really light feel, but still had that factory sloppy feel. This was after installing in a forum members car.
I have a Hurst in my car personally, and though it's notchy and stiff, it's very short and quick, and I love it.
I went with the MGW 35%. They also make a 25%. Shifts are very precise "gunbolt" action like. A thousand times better than stock. Install was easy and took about 1.5 hours. Do a search on shifter and you'll find tons of info. The problem with most after market shifters is noise. Not so with the MGW. It does take a little effort but doesn't bother me. If I was a girl (or a wimp) I would go for the 25%. Mine's still pretty stiff but I've only had it a couple weeks or about 100 miles. Maybe it'll get easier. Hope that helps.
When I first installed mine it was very stiff.
After a week or two it is just right.
Not so much notchy as pricise.
Viperbluelx was going to cut a factory unit and test the results but havn't heard if he has done it or the results.
It would be shorter, but still sloppy I would imagine.
If you want to shorten a stock shifter, here is one way to do it that will eliminate the sloppy feeling of the stock shifter. If you want even shorter throws, you can cut the threaded end after you've done this mod. You need to get rid of the rubber insert, or the shifter will still feel sloppy. It goes easily into all gears including reverse and doesn't rattle. It may not be as good as the aftermarket shifters, but it's a huge improvement for almost no money.

I changed to a Kirban Kwik Shift and it is excellant. Yes it is still a bit notchy but there is no way you are going to miss a shift like with a stock shifter. The ease of shifting is still easy, you don't have to start lifting weights to change gears! I also cut off 1" off and threaded down another 3/4" to make the shifter shorter which seems to work just fine.
good luck with whatever you do!
I have never played with the Hurst, But I love my B&M! Some say it is to stiff but it comes with three sets of springs. You can set it up how ever you feel.
