I just got my first vette and am new to this board. The posts regarding the steering wheel lock have me concerned. Is this a very prevalent problem? Has GM come up with a fix? Should I purchase the bypass? Thanks in advance for your advice.
Welcome to the forum. I see from your profile that you have a 99 C5. There is a TSB out on the column lock which cuts off around mid-2000. So, if you're car has not already had the replacement installed, you should contact the dealer. No charge.
Some people swear by the bypass, but it is exactly that, a bypass. You will lose the locking feature when the key is pulled. Your choice.
Some will tell you it is a concern, some will say it is not. 2002s have the "new" lock and are not subject to the recall. The sympton is a column lock that will not unlock when the ignition is turned on; consequently you can't move the steering wheel.
I like the anti-theft feature of having the steering locked. All my cars have had it since 1969.
I am a new owner too. Is this a concern for 2002? What are the symptoms?
It is only a concern if you have a 6 sp, the A4 does not lock the steering wheel since the 01's came out. I have heard of an 02 locking up. The earlier bypass will not work with the newer recall units. I am not sure if the 02's are the same as the the fix from GM, but if it is, you may not be able to use the bypass until the newer version of it is available. I do not know if it is in the works or completed yet however.
