Ok so I bought this rearend off of ebay (as some of you may have read my other thread) and I'm attempting to inspect it for damage, problem is I don't really know what I'm looking at. I'm able to rotate the gear assembly fairly easily via the exposed ring gear. However, I noticed that there is some play when I wiggle the exposed shaft on the "cone" side of the rearend. The movement is only a few mm or so but the shaft of the other side of the case doesn't seem to move at all. Should I be concerned? Is this normal? Anything else I should be looking at?

Typically the only way to tell if a rear is bad is to put it on, unless the case is cracked or you can see visual damage.
Most rear ends start to make a high pitch noise indicating the bearings are going..
Posting up a picture would also help explain what you mean.

I'm at work right now and I don't have access to a camara. The rearend has never been used before. The shaft I'm refering to is the axel shaft on the "cone" side of the rearend (opposite the side of the ring gear)...the shaft that the axel slides onto. If your looking the back end of the car it would be the left side. The reason I'm concerned with the movement (when I wiggle it) is because A)the other axel shaft does not seem to move at all and B)there is a small mark on the tip of the shaft (the grooves are not damaged at all). I don't know if they dropped this differential on its side or what. If slight movement is to be expected then I won't worry about it but if someone can tell me that there shouldn't be any movement at all then I'll have to see what I can do about sending the differential back to the seller.

I'll go out and check mine in a few minutes for ya and post back up.
