Does anyone know if you can weld in a steel peice of pipe to the ti exhaust to do the bypass mod or do you definetly NEED a peice of ti pipe to weld it on?
Dont think you can weld two dis-similar metals....plus welding Ti needs to be in a special environment....otherwise the welds are extremely brittle and just crack.
Call a few specialized welders in your area....Im sure you can find someone capable enough for the task.
There are a few guys up in Ncal that weld Ti on their workbench with no problems of cracking afterwards. You just need to be a decent welder to do it. You also need to use the same metals.
It has to be Ti to Ti, and the weld has to be protected on all sides by an inert gas such as Argon (even the "back" of the weld). The "environment" the welding is done in must be very clean (no oil, air drafts, dirt, humidity) as hot to molten titanium soaks up contaminents and becomes both brittle and looses its corrosion resistance if contaminated.
Call around, see if you can locate a shop that KNOWS how to weld titanium. Your average "muffler" shop is not in that list. Check for "industrial" welders.
Titanium, because of its cost and hardness is still not a common material in industry. Aerospace is about the biggest user of it for its strength and lightness.
The supplier of the titanium for our exhaust systems is ...

You have to use titanium......I ordered a piece that I still have to install. I am gonna have alot of extra pipe left that I will be willing to sell. I'm not sure how much I will need but the pipe I have is 36" long. PM me if you are interested.

There are combinations of metals that you can join by welding. Mild steel and chromoly comes to mind. Unfortunately, titanium is not one.
