99 c5 coupe started up just fine after work. I turned off the engine after it being on for only about 2 minutes and then tried to start the car again. Nothing. Lights worked...power was fine...jumping the car did nothing. Ultimately the car ended up starting about a half hour later.
My guess is that perhaps there is something wrong with the starter?? I had the battery and alternator tested the week before so it's unlikely either one of those.
Where is the starter on these things?
Any links to service manual type stuff?
Is this something that can be changed out by a relative novice?
Take hold of the red wire on the battery, slide your hand down it about a foot and a half. That other end is the starter. If that wire is loose, tighten the nut. If the post in the starter is loose (wiggles or nut won't tighten but keeps turning and pulling the post out) you need a new starter. The post burns the bakelite around it and will break loose sometimes. The starter is not easy to change because of the location, but if you are mechanically inclined, it's not a major challenge. Since you didn't know where the starter was, you might want to enlist some assistance.
If you have to replace the starter it's not real hard. I did mine in about two hours so you could probably do it in one. Takes longer to get the ex pipe out of the way than it does to chg the starter.
Mine will do it every once and a while. The wire that goes from the solenoid to the starter, I have to get a wrench on it, back it off and then tighten it down again. Fixes it every time. I would fix it but I have to pull the header to get the starter out. haven't had time.
The starter is not that bad of the job. Just go ahead and remove the x-pipe. It will greatly speed up the change. Just buy new exhaust gaskets (at least the back ones).
Starting problems can be any of the items below. So check the cheap stuff first.
Bad Battery
Corrosion on Wires
Theft Deterrant Relay
Clutch Pedal sensor
Ignition Switch Starter
If you do a search for TDR or theft deterrant relay you can find out how to test it and the other items easily.
