Default Exhaust/Fuel Smell in Cabin...

I am getting an exhaust/fuel smell (can't really tell which) in the cabin of the car when I turn the AC on. It started about a week ago. The only thing I've done to it recently is change the plugs about 5 weeks ago. I removed the AIR system to access the driver's side plugs - don't know if that could be the problem....

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
Dave

Did you replace the gasket where the AIR hose connects to the exhaust manifold? Maybe a hose is still loose, unplugged?

I reused the existing gasket. It was in fairly good shape, but maybe it needs to be replaced with a new one. I'll take a look.

I wonder if the bolts have worked their way out and broke the seal. I changed the plugs 5 or 6 weeks ago, but didn't start to notice the smell until last week...

Your HVAC system takes a suction on the cowl area below the window. Is the hood gasket that seals the hood and cowl there in good shape, complete and functioning?

Has anyone cut a hole in the cowl to replace your oil pressure sensor?

Yes, if you replaced or worked on the AIR System, that flange could be leaking. If it is, it would flood the engine bay with fumes and it could still be sucked in to the HVAC System.

Let us know what you find.

Bill - thanks for your input!!! We've never interacted before, but I've been a big (silent) fan of your input to the board.

The hood gasket is good, and there's no cut in the cowl, so I am going to go with the AIR system theory.

I'll take a look this weekend and post my findings...

Thanks again!!!

Dave

The hood seal isnt perfect so,,,,if you have any leakage in the AIR check valves ,,,,,your going to smell it.

If the A.I.R pipe gaskets/valves were leaking, you would hear an exhaust leak.

Yes, maybe,,,,probably NO!

I have an 02 ZO6. I added headers and figured all was good. I did a SEAFOAM treatment some 5 years after the header install and DURING the treatment,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,I saw smoke emitting from the AIR flange on the headers . So,,,,,,,,,,,,,I pulled the A. I . R. flange and there was NOT a gasket in the joint.

I made a gasket and used some red HIGH TEMP sealer to help seal the gasket. Been good ever since!

MORAL of the story,,,,,,,Ya never know......................
