Default Rotor removal tips:

I can't get the driver's side front rotor off my '00 base 'vette. I've been told there might be a hole in the hub that I can thread a bolt into to break them free. Does this exist on C5's? What threads does it have (if it exists)?

It is rusted to the hub. Common problem.

To break the rust free, hit the rotor with a mallet. You can use a hammer if you place wood between the rotor and hammer.

When reassembling, put a LIGHT coating of high temp anti-seize on the mating surfaces.

Best to use the 2000-degree anti-seize. (Some anti-seize is only rated at 1200-degrees)

Use a solider flux brush to spread it out.

Good idea, but remember to first remove the rust with wire brush/emery cloth

if you are replacing the rotor hit it with whatever you want, as hard as you want - it's junk anyway...

I like to hit both my hubs and mating surfaces of my rotors with a wire brush every time I take the rotors off - don't have a problem with sticking if you keep things clean...

I've WD40'd it, beat on it, heated it up, beat on it. I can't get the damn thing to come loose to save my life.

It might be a stupid question but did you remove BOTH bolts? There's not that much surface area to stick that hard.

Get a can of "PB Blaster" and a big *** (5+lb) sledge hammer, brass or steel will work. Give it a good soak on the mating surface then start really beating the hell out of it. If you can crank the wheel all the way to one side then hit it from behind that will also help...

It also depends on what you mean by "beat on it" - I've told people to give something a good whack and they tapped it like they were afraid it might hit back. When I showed them what I meant by a good whack they **** kittens, but saw that it takes a hard hit to get things to come loose sometimes...

I'm guessing you removed the two retainers off the studs?

PB-Blaster or Zep 45 it to death. Hit it with a sand filled mallet from all sides. If you have a brass drift, hit the lugs a couple times.

I had to soak mine with PB several times and let it soak in for 30 min or more. Then hit it hard!

Look closely at the studs ... make sure the factory "washers" or retainers have been removed. A pair of pliers will unscrew them. Throw them away once you have them off.

Markus - have you finished this job yet? Holler at me either on this board or on HSV. I might be able to swing by this weekend and take a shot at it.

Naw, I'm still working on it. I took last night off. I stopped by Lowes on my way home and picked up a can of PB and a 4 lbs. hammer. I've hit it with the PB twice now, and the hammer several times. I'm letting it soak a little while and I'm going to go out and do it again.

Next time, slightly loosen the lug nuts, then put the car in reverse, back up a little bit and apply the brakes several times. This should break the rotor loose. If you beat on the rotor you take a chance on breaking the abs speed sensor ring. So be careful with beating on it.
