Humy: It depends, of course, on your driving conditions. Normal roads/driving and you can go 15-20K. Dusty/dirty roads and you may need to do it every 5 or 6K. The filter has a dodad that is supposed to tell you when it need attention, but I would probably clean it before it has that much trouble "breathing." :yesnod: :)
I'd be curious to hear from anyone who's Donaldson "DoDad" has popped in!! I'm leary about how accurate it is. It seems to me that it would take quite a bit of vacuum to pop the DoDad.. Perhaps a WOT run to redline would be required? :D
Also, even though everyone pig-piles on me when I say it, the Donaldson documentation states "between 50K and 100K miles in typical driving applications". Unlike changing your oil, cleaning the filter too often MAY have repercussions such as weakening the filter material.
Food for thought. I plan an cleaning mine when it looks like it needs it!
I just cleaned mine recently after about 6,000 miles. The filter was no way close to needing cleaning. I'd bet 10,000 mile would be about right. I also heard that the indicator doesn't really work.
Is there anything special to the cleaner and oil for the blackwing? There was a posting by someone else saying they washed their filter with simple green and sprayed mineral oil on it when dry. Does anyone know if this would damage the filtering media on the blackwing?

I don't know, but a cleaning kit only costs around $15. I wouldn't try it.
Many of you will no doubt clean your air filter as often as you change your oil.
however you dont have to clean it that often, infact its not good to over service an air filter. That restriction indicator is nothing new, it does work and it can be trusted and should be used as an indicator to clean the filter or not.
The Donaldson has a very large surface area and can get quite dirty and still pass way more air than the engine will ever need..
