Default C5 Belts GOING BAD FAST

I am wondering if anyone has had this problem. The serpentine belt on my stock 1999 C5 has been replaced 5 times in the past 4 years because it develops a sqeaking that would not go away. When I look under the hood everything looks good. I just replaced the belt and belt tensioner a few months ago but now it has started again. I am not sure what the part is called but a large wheel towards the bottom of the belt has a LITTLE wobble in it. A mechanic has said that he does not think that it is the problem.

The harmonic balancer on my '99 C5 wobbled and my belts squeaked. I replaced the harmonic balancer and the squeaking immediately disappeared.

Wobbling balancer is a fairly common problem. It will wear the belts much quicker. Do a search on here and read all about it.

you've got a pulley problem. Watch it run and see which wobbles. It doesn't need to be severe. If it was, the belt would be jumping over ribs

Please switch to Goodyear Gatorback belts (sold at Auto Zone). It's like $42 for both and should permanently fix the squeal.

Just met a lady with a 98C5 about 2 weeks ago at a Vette shop that was having the same problem, squeaky belt, come to find out you can see her HB wobbling, plus hers had a "nick" and the belt was coming off. Not good.

Harmonic balancer is most assuredly the problem, just went through it with mine. See if your crank bolt is loose, pretty definite sign the balancer is going bad.

Funny...mine started squeeking just the other day!

I sprayed some WD40 on the belt only and it stopped, so I fgured it was just the belt and not a pulley issue? Sound reasonable?

Which pulley is the balancer, and is it a PITA to replace?

Thanks,
al

Sounds to me like it's time to upgrade to an underdrive pulley

Most definitely YES a PITA

Large pulley (Harmonic Balancer) is at bottom center of the engine – end of the crankshaft.

Balancer....look at the pulley you will most likely see what appears to be a rubber bushing protruding from between the pulley and the balancer....trust me on this

Hmmm...just in case it turns out to be the worst case...

Anyone here have any "how-to's" for changing the pulley?

Here's the link to the ls1howto instructions for doing a head/cam swap. The balancer is part of that procedure.
