Default Clutch Install Without Transaxle Removal?

Is it completely neccessary to remove the tranny and rear end just for a clutch install at the other end of the drivetrain? Can't just the torque tube be removed? Read dope's install/removal on cajundude's site which involved the removal of the transaxle. Is it possible to do other wise? Gonna be replacing the rear main seal while back there too.

Sadly no. I just dropped it down and back a foot to put the clutch in, resting the input shaft on the bellhousing.

Mine was in the ditch last week because the AWD Audi was having clutch problems.... I guess Audi did not design a shift fork to last 160,000 miles!

That was the day after I brought her home. I parked it in my driveway to take a nice picture after I lifted it up psi washed the bottom and waxed it.

long 1/4" extension with a 13mm swivel socket. On the drivers side and 3/8" swivel on the right one.

If you are talking about the bolts that bolt the bell housing to the block, you don;t need to take those out. At least i didn't. Just unbolt the torque tube from the bellhousing.

I am in the middle of the process. Just installed the flywheel release bearing and pilot bearing last night. Hope to finish it this weekend

How did you get the flywheel out with the bellhousing still bolted to the engine?

The bottom part of the bellhousing comes off and there is plenty of room to remove the pressure plate and flywheel through there.
(Ask me how I know that)

There is an inspection plate on the bottom of the bell housing. If you have headers, you will prpobably have to at the very least loosen them, if not completely un bolt them and push them out of the way. the inspcetion plate is held on by 4 bolts, 2 13mm and 2 10mm bolts if i remember correctly. The teeth on the flywheel did get caught between the inside of the housing and nose of the starter, but I pushed it back up and it came out fine the 2nd time.

Taking the bell housing off might give you more room to work with, but not sure it is worth messing with.

Also, be careful unbolting PP and flywheel. they are kind of heavy so be sure you have a good grip on them.

I see. I always just took the bellhousing off. It makes it easier to torque the psi plate down.

That is what we did. you just have to keep rotating your engine to get the proper toruque pattern on the clutch

I was led to believe that it was very difficult to pull the bell housing, so I didn't even try. I just cranked the engine over with a wrench on the crank bolt
