OK .... here'e the "complete" list from the Service Manual

J8001 Dial Indicator Set (corrected number from my first post)
J23907 Slide Hammer
J25070 Heat Gun
J29369-2 Left Output shaft bearing remover
J36221 Hydraulic Line Clutch seperator
J36797 Output shaft seal installer
J42055 Transmission Support
J42155 Differential lifting tool
J42157 Leeft Output shaft bearing installer
J42159 Differential Side Bearing Remover
J42162 Side Gear Compressor
J42164 Pinion Gear Holder
J42166 Front Pinion Bearing Remover
J42168-1 Gauge Cylinder
J42168-11 Rear Pinion Centering Assembly
J42168-13 Gauge Plate Assembly
J42168-15 Compressor Assembly
J42168-16 Spacers
J42168-2 Gauge Assembly
J42168-7 Depth Gauge
J42168-9 Holding Strap
J42170 Bearing and Race Installer
J42172 Bearing Race Installer/Spanner Wrench
J42173 Differential Holding Fixture
J42194 Bearing Race Remover

The first three are "generic" tools, all the rest look to me from the drawings to be specific to the Getrag differential (well the J42055 would probably work on other vehicles ... looks like an adapter to make a floor jack attach to the tranny/differential set-up).

Quite an effort going on here. I think it great that you all are trying to get the info nailed-down on this.

Isn't the cost of the tools + the risk of error + cost of the gears > the cost of a fully assembled diff?

Well it is starting to look like some of the tolls are common and others can be made. Yes the easy way out is to buy a diff.......in the long run maybe cheaper, but I have the instructions and the tool list. The same ones that the GM guys at the dealership use to do this job. I am not looking necessarily at doing this only once. If I can pull it off, which I am still not fully sure, then it might come in handy to others with my write up. I am a firm believer in trying to do every thing my self, well minus cnc work, haha. I am half tempted to take the fall and cost if this project was to fall through. I can get all of the parts the pros use to build, for instance the turn key stage 4 diff ($2799), at a fraction of the cost. What I mean is, if I can do it, it will cost way less! It is just the man hours that add up.

If you could find someone local who also wanted to do this, you could split the tooling costs and it would be even cheaper. I hope you can do it!

That is my plan, my tuner has a demand for gear swap, if I can get him started with all of the info, I am hoping that he will buy the tools

I found a couple of tool kits on eBay last week.
These kits have directions for using the tools as well.
The shim selector even has a video.

This web site has a lot of good info. Just trying to give something back.

More useful numbers:

J42168 Kent-More Getrag axle shim selector contains:
