I beleive the rule of thumb is 500 miles, not to exceed certain rpms an MPH

I bought one from DTE (great gears!). The documents that came with it just said no WOT until 500 miles have past. During that time I didn't take it much past 3K rpm's either. You also have to change the gear oil after the break-in period.

I drove my car for 500 miles with no WOT runs or hard launches...it took a lot of self control to say the least but it was well worth it.

Man, I agree. It takes all the self control in the world.

I must have been mis-informed. I thought you had to replace the whole housing because you could'nt swap just the gears. I was going to do this when I first go my car but I was told this.. any links to sites?

It's not that you can't... but "shouldn't" swap the internal gears. It's not a shadetree mechanic DIY type of project. Many specialized tools and heavy reliance on first hand experience are needed.

And because of the extensive R&R of the carrier... you want to get this right the first time.

so whats more cost effective, letting a reputable shop do the swap or buy the housing?

all you can do is compare prices for similar offerings.

you can purchase a brand new GMPD 3.42 Z06 carrier for around $1100 - $1200.

when comparing this price to aftermarket shop conversions... make certain you compare apples to apples. The GM Z06 3.42 does not have hardened output shaft(s); which isn't really necessary IMO unless you're an avid dragracer running higher HP and/or drag radials. But if you are an avid dragracer, then you'll want a carrier with the updated hardened output shaft(s).

As others have posted, the rule of is 500miles and no WOT. Plus you should change your fluid.

However,
If you buy a completed pumpkin from GM (either the standard 3.42 or Z06 3.42) there is no break-in required. They come already broken in from the factory.

The break-ins are only necessary when the actual gears are swapped in your unit.

Still, even buying a new pumpkin, I'd take it easy for a while.
