VIN Number From Engine Or Computer?
Is there a way to determine the vehicle VIN number from any numbers on the block...I haven't looked closely, but I know there must be some kind of number(s). If the engine number is associated with the VIN, how or where can I get the conversion/association to determine the VIN. Or is the VIN number stored in the PCM?
Thanks,

Yes, the engine should have a label or stampings on it with the "VIN derivative"and Engine ID number. The label(s)/stampings will be at the back of the engine, on the drivers side, on the vertical side of the block and just above that where the head meets the block.
The VIN derivative is simply there so you can "match" the engine to the car .... in other words was this the engine that shipped from the factory .... the VIN derivative for a 1999 will look like 1X5xxxxxx ...
1 = Chevrolet
X = 1999
5 = Bowling Green
xxxxxx = Plant Sequence Number
So you compare the xxxxxx to the last six digits of the vehicle VIN plate to ensure that they "match" .... and a match means the engine came from the factory in this car.
Easiest to see if a scanner will display it from the PCM.
