Default Problem with my QTP cutouts..help!

First of all, i will say, i called QTP, and they really were NO help! All the guy said was, pull everything off and send it in. not like its that easy in the first place!

So, heres the story, one cutout stopped working, i sent it in for rebuild (mind you, this would be the 3rd time). i got it back, slapped it in this weekend. nothing! wtf im thinking, this is brand new. the other side works fine, so i plugged the rebuilt one in there, nothing still. plug old back in, works fine.

second problem happens now. pressing the switch, the working cutout opens (or closes) intermittenly. other does nothing. ok, wtf now!

car is in storage right now so the battery was dead. i had a jumper box on it to power the system. does the setup need a lot of power to open/close?

I am thinkin maybe my switch is going bad???

any thoughts guys? last resort i want to do is tear apart my dash when the car is sitting on a showfloor in a dealership. yanking the actual cutout is not a big deal...

thanks!!!

I have them on my F350 and have had some problems with them. I think my problems on the truck is due to mud, sand and salt air from the beach. Mine would go out sometimes and come back for no reason. I have taken mine a part and cleaned the gears and motor more than once. . I found the gears rusty each time. I think it just rusts and sticks them together, and the motor isn't strong enough to break up the rust. Have someone operate the switch with you near the cutout and see if you can hear the motor whine. It might be stuck internally.

Edit: Try the working cut out on the side where the faulty one came from, that could eliminate the wire/ electric issue as the problem on that side.

i have tried using someone operating the switch and myself looking at the actual cutout...there is not motor whine... thats what i thought to myself as well..i however did not switch the good one to the bad wiring side... thats worth a try... thanks for the idea!!!

ohh, and my car...only driven on nice days...so rules out rust or sand... but i inspected them too for rust, none is there...

others?

I'm sure your vette doesn't see the conditions my F350 does...I think the condensation that travels though the exhaust is enough to rust up the gears. The gears have very fine teeth and seem to have very tight tolerances. Anything in there could easily make them malfuction. Although you said you can't hear the motor whine when someone else operates the switch...points towards a electrical problem. Maybe the switch, wires or maybe a bad motor..you'll have a better idea once you try the good cut out on the bad side.

That is a pretty common problem with them. I have a few buddies that put them on when they were hot a few years ago, don't think any of them lasted more than a few months.

i have talked with QTP directly again, they will warranty the cutout if it is indeed a bad motor they installed. but i think my switch is fried so i just gotta get it out of the console...

we'll see what happens, i'll post it up when i get results!

I usually test my qtp before I install then with a 9 volt battery and two wires tapes to the battery. Its a good way to check the valve for adjustments.

found my problem. the positive and negative wires were soldered individually, but were not heat shrinked seperately... so both wires were touching each other. then they were wrapped tightly in electrical tap...short circuit right there! plain as day.
im pretty sure it shorted out my switch since now i have no power when trying to open or close, no LED in either direction. but i do have power to the switch, the nuetral LED is always on when in nuetral. i think there is a fuse on each line, so i'll have to jack the car up and check them out...

ahh...more pain...
just thought i would update you guys who were accusing me of attacking QTP. while i love their product, this is SIMPLE wiring knowledge!!!

I'd like to install cutouts on my coupe also but I read a lot of these threads about QTP's poor quality control. Is there a company that offers an electric cutout with good quality and reliability? I know we have some talented vendors on this forum... (hint hint).
