I am installing a Spec stage 3+ clutch. After having many things go wrong with my current project and pretty sure the car would shake if I didn't, decided it was best to balance the stock flywheel before installing it.
Well, when I picked it up, the guy said he took out 40 grams. Before drilling, he double checked it on another shop's machine and it was the same.
I don't remember the car having much of a shake to it with the stock set-up. Is 40 grams normal for balancing a flywheel? Is it possible that the engine will be unbalanced now with the balanced flywheel?
I read a post not long ago that GM may have had unbalanced engines and used the flywheel to make up for it, so with a balanced flywheel it could be unbalanced. Any truth to that?
I'm pretty sure you have to balance the pressure plate and flywheel together. i.e mount the PP to the flywheel, then balance the assembly.
Yes there was truth to the the unbalanced engines. In the manual it states that if you are changing the flywheel and pressure plate to have them zero balanced, then look for a counterbalance weight in the flywheel and if one is found put it in the new flywheel in the same spot as the one coming out.
What the shop did was balanced the flywheel, then checked the PP itself. Then the two together so it should be a balanced assembly. I am very concerned that since so much came off that I am going to have an ubalanced engine now. Which is the reason I had the damn thing balanced in the first place.
Screw it...I'm just going to have to install as is and hope for the best
I just got to my shop and looking at the flywheel. It does have a hole filled with some sort of plug. It was zero balanced with that plug in it. Plus I did not check the position of the crank when i removed it. I think all the warnings I from forum members was to be sure I had the flywheel and PP balanced together.
hey amraam u ever have any problems?? i have my clutch and flywheel out now and im getting conflicting answers about replacing the exixting weights into the new flywheel, which is LS7 flywheel that is already neutrally balanced, im so confused and i need my car!!
Iknow for sure it was in the 2000 i had weights in my flywheel.. You need to have your stock pressure plate and flywheel balanced to check where its at if its close to zero install the new zero balanced clutch..
If its way out you should have the new balanced to the old... First off look on the backside of your flywheel any weight added
