So I just installed a set of borla straight pipes on my 98 A4 and it obviously sounds a little rough to say the least. I planned on welding in a set of dynomax race bullets into the H pipe to smooth out the idle and easy acceleration tone.
My question is if I saved up for a little longer and bought a borla x-pipe, will this give me a few extra hp and smooth it out a little so it doesn't sound like a farm truck or should I just go ahead and weld in the bullets?
BTW- I'm a big fan of a loud exhaust, thats why I wanted to go this route.
You definitely want to save up for the Borla x-pipe. I initially put the Borla straight pipes (only) on my '98 and hated the raspy sound. The Borla center section is a bit pricey, however the improvement in sound is just short of fantastic! The Borla center section is a resonator and x-pipe combined in one unit.
It fits well and I had mine installed by Meineke muffler in 20 minutes flat. It definitely does smooth out the sound. The loudness is only slightly decreased and the sound has a much more powerful tone to it. It also just about eliminates, the "burble & pop" on deceleration.
I'm not a fan of the pop pop pop sound during acceleration/deceleration. I don't want the exhaust to be quiet just smoothed out if you know what i mean. Right now it just sounds like glasspacks
