Default average temps for a c5

I just bought my vette no codes, but what is the average temp at idle if you were to idle for more then 10-15 minutes or like in heavy traffic.

Mine creeps up well over 200 degrees about 3/4 of the way on the gage, did not come close to the red but it still got hot.

started moving and it came right down under 200 degrees.

I am pretty sure it got to about 220-230 maybe 240 will have to look at the gage. the gage seemed to do what my hot rod did if it was or is running hot and you turn on the lights the gage moved a big more to the right. I never figured out what caused that in my hot rod.

Let me know what it should be doing

thanks

Mine used to hit 220 at a drive through. Then I swapped a 180 thermo and reprogrammed my fans. Now it hasn't went over 198 yet. At speed it maintains 188-190 Kinda wish I went with a 160 but summers coming and we'll see.

Keep in mind that the cooling system is designed to cool with movement of air under the car. Standing still you depend on the electric fans and what ever temp air they can pull. ie: hot air from the heated pavement and motor heat.

The stock settings for the fans are ....

The low speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 108°C (226°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 104°C (219°F). The high speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 113°C (235°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 108°C (226°F). When the A/C is on and the coolant temperature reaches 85°C (185°F), the low speed cooling fan will be turned on at vehicle speeds less than 56 kPh (35 mph).

What you saw is normal behaviour for the car.

I will run anywhere around 200-210 depending on how hot and how slow Im going. Ive heard getting up to 230 isnt too unusual in traffic conditions or super hot days. Oh and I have a black car..yes it makes it hotter.

That is about right. The temp can get to about 240 before the fans bring it down. Nothing to worry about on modern cars. Monitor the temp on the DIC as it is more accurate than the analog gauge.

Coolant temp will fluctuate between 190 and 240 during normal driving for me, it all depends on how fast I am moving, how hard I am driving and what the ambient temperatures are.

Oil temperature once warmed up usually doesn't dip under 210 degrees and during normal driving will get into the 250's, when I am really thrashing on it will get up into the 290's.

FWIW I like to keep my DIC set to oil temp since there isn't an analog gauge for it, gives me a better idea of the actual internal engine temps rather than the coolant in the water jacket around the motor...

My '99 will run between 195 and 225. At 226 the fans come on. A good test for radiator effeciency is see how fast the temp come down after the fans come on. It takes a longer time for the temp to come down when driving because the air condensor is in front of the radiator and air is tring to be pushed through it to the radiator. When the fans come on the air is sucked in. My temp will come down from 226 to 210 with in 2 minutes after the fan comes on.

you might want to consider to have your fan temps set lower. Some one skilled with the computer controls can do this in mere minutes.

I had my fans controller lower about 20 degrees, and my car, and I run cooler.

I'll see 220 if I'm sitting on a hot day for 10 minutes. Once I clean out underneath and in between I don't think I'll see that anymore.

what do you mean by 'computer controls'?? is there some way to lower the temps without taking it to a tuner?

If you havent cleaned out the radatior and air conditioner condenser you will be suprised how much stuff is there small animals paper and plastic bags the front is like a vac.. I put mine up on a lift and use an air hose with a long nozzel to blow the stuff out it will lower your temps as much as 15 deg

I agree. Do some searches on the forum and get the basics complete before it gets hot outside. Clean the radiator, check that the foam and skirts are in the right places so the air is all forced through the radiator. You may want to flush the system, too. Fans kick on around 230F. Many folks change thermostats, lower fan control temps, try different mixtures of coolant/water/additive, install bigger radiators, etc to get the temps down further.

Most of the time you should be running closer to 210-220 while sitting in traffic and under 200 on highway.

You should never really go over 230-235 sitting in traffic.
