Default Tire Pressure installing in new wheel problems

I bought some new Z06 style wheels today and when they tried to mount the TPS in the wheels they would not seat properly and air leaked out around them

Would it be possible to use some type O-ring on them or would it be best to just leave them out.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
I am new to the C5 and have never had a car with TPS before so I am sorta lost.

What year C5 do you own? 97-00 cars used a TPS with a generic rubber o-ring around the valve stem. 01-04 have a stepped, molded-on rubber seal around the valve stem. Are you sure the valve stem hole in the wheel is sized correctly?

Sorry,
it is a 98.
The normal valve stems worked great but when they installed the TPS they leaked.

So did the TPS that you attempted to install have an o-ring on them or not?

To be honest and sound dumb
I do not know.
I will have to look tomorrow.
I am just repeating what I was told at the shop.
They told me that it appeared the hole was too big in my new rims which are copycat Z06 wheels so it may be possible that they are not exact copies.

I guess I should have more info before asking questions.

There should be an O-ring that helps seal the TPMS to the rim. The TPMS is held in place by a nut, and for a 1998 the nut should be tightened to 62 inch/pounds, or 7 Nm .... NOTE ... that is INCH, not FOOT pounds.

If the sensor nut is overtightened the sensor can be damaged and cease to work.

If you are really stuck, go to Home Depot and ask for the #9 O-ring ... it should work fine for sealing the sensors.

I thought I read somewhere with having to double up the orings on the aftermarket wheels to get them to seal. It has been a while back and I can't remember. I think my friend had to do that with his aftermarket C6 Z wheels. I can ask him on Monday.

Heres a picture of a 97-00 TPS:

Here is a picture of a 2001-2004 TPS

The sealing gasket are different between the two. One is just a plain O ring and the other is a molded rubber seal.

Make sure you use the model specific for your year car. They cant be substituted.

#9 O rings work great in the 97-2000 sensors. I coat them with just a thin coat of dielectric ........make sure they're seated properly in the recess around the base of the sensor stem.

OK,
Mine look just like the ones above for the 97-00

The wheels I bought were for a newer Vette.

Am I correct in thinking that I can buy some O-rings and install them in my new wheels or did I misunderstand the above post?

Thanks for all the help.

With the 1997 - 2000 stock wheels, the sensors need an O-ring to seal correctly. Same with third party wheels. Install the O-rings and all should be fine, look above and be sure the nut is not over tightened .... that will destroy the sensor.

Easy fix -- get the #9 o-rings (home depot if your tire shop doesn't already have them), and you'll be set. Had the same problem -- the older sensors sometimes don't fit the newer wheels.

The replacement grommet is GM part # 25715243, and fits the 1997 & up Corvettes.
