Blackwing install no sensor but found a resistor????
Buddy bought a 99 a couple years ago. It had already came equiped with the Blackwing intake. He is taking it in to smog and asked if I would go over the car to inspect the visual. while the Blackwing is not smog legal I know most will look past as long as it passes the inspection. My concern is he does not seem to have a IAC (think thats what it is) plugged into his airbridge but instead a small resistor rigged into the end og the harness. He does not get any codes. Will this be a problem? Does it make any sense to you???
Immediately behind the Blackwing is the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor .... then the airbridge .... then an accordion like connection to the Throttle Body. The MAF should have a set of wires connected to it using a 5 pin connector. Is that what is disconnected ????
I "think" he is describing the plug that is on the left (drivers side) of the airbridge on 2000 and earlier cars? I have one on mine, but my neighbors Z06 (2001) does not.
It's a sensor that is also run along the same cabling as the wire that plugs into the MAF, but branches off just before it gets to the accordion connection to the TB. I think that was removed on new cars about 2001?

Bill,
Thank you .... I forgot that the IAT sensor was in the airbridge until GM "integrated" it into the MAF in 2001.

That is the Intake Air Temperature sensor. The reason (probably) that it is disconnected is some people (mistakenly) think that by putting a resistor on the wire they can "fool" the PCM into thinking the intake air is colder than it really is, therefore causing the PCM to run a slightly "richer" (and the thinking is therefore "more powerful") A/F mix.
If you simply remove the resistor the PCM will throw either a P0112 or P0113 (or both).
I'd go ahead and remove the resistor and plug the wiring back into the IAT. Test drive the car and check the computer for either of the above codes .... it is also possible that the IAT failed some time in the past and a previous owner, not wanting to spend the money to replace the IAT, put the resistor on there.
Plugging the wiring back in will increase the odds that the car will pass the smog check as the PCM has more accurate information to use in determining the A/F ratio.
Thanks guys. I knew they changed it in 01. My 00 had one and the 01 does not. He has a 99. I think they plugged it up because the vortex airbridge he is running was made for a 01+ since there is not a hole available. I think he is going to use my stock 00 intake and connect my IAT. Thanks again see you freeday and Advanced
