my 2000 coupe interior dash lights are acting up. when i get in the car they light up as the should but when i put the key in the ignition and start the engine they go out as they should but when i turn on the headlights the interior lights DO NOT light up like they should. every single light on the dash is out with the EXCEPTION of my climate control, radio, odometer read out, and heads up display. the best way to describe it is if im driving around with the interior dimmer switch turned all they down. does anyone have the solution?? the funny thing is that the lights work when i first open the door and enter the car.
That is different. Does the HUD illumination change with its slider control? If not, then the connector would be off the cluster connection which has the internal dimmer on it. Are the external parking lights working at night? Checked all the fuses? Pull codes?

will be checking later today, thanks for responding
Hmm. This exact thing happened to me, exactly one time only. Half way through a five-day road trip, I turned on the headlights at night and the cluster had no lights. HVAC/radio lights worked; HUD worked. Checked my dimmer switch and it was full on.
I turned off the headlights; then turned them back on... and suddenly I was back in business. Never saw that happen again.
Could be the multifunction switch, its the turn signal lever. Do some searches here and see if looks the same. Do your tail lights also go out? If its the switch, its kind of a PIA but you can replace it with out taking off the steering wheel. But, its like $100 at the dealer. I'd go with gmpartshouse.com if you have time.

I was thinking the same thing. I know a lot more about the brightness of the HUD and HVAC controllers, but the normal night-time background illumination, I don't. It could be the dimmer control itself has failed too but curious if the outside lights are working or not.
ok checked it out further and my rear running lights dont work either so it sounds like that multifunction switch thats being mentioned so i will start by replacing that. where exactly is it located again?? i actually heard a clicking sound when the cluster lights went on and back off again before completely going out for good from the center console area below my climate control *****.
Start with the obvious....check all of the fuses. The multifunction switch is the headlamp switch on the steering column. It "can" be replaced without removing the steering wheel. A new runs like $150 or so depending on where you get it from and a lot more than that from the dealer. You should first try out Bill's repair of it as he mentioned as you probably only have a bad contact in there.
well it looks like the extended warranty i bought through my credit union is paying off. they covered the multifunction switch and it saved me $633 today with a $0 deductible at the chevy dealer. so far the warranty is paying off since i used it for the hvac contoller a couple months back also.
