Default Whining noise 2.0

I used to have (recently) a whine, that was consistent with acceleration. Thought was that it was a misaligned shifter, but I checked it out and its lined up perfectly.

Now the noise has changed recently. It started becoming intermittent, but now it's regular. I hear it between 3500-4100 rpm. Its a whistling WhoooOOOO noise. I only hear it in first (6spd.) I faintly hear something like it in second. Didnt have the opportunity to get to 3500rpm in third; however.

It sounds like its coming from the center of the dash. AC on or off makes no difference.

Any other thoughts? TIA.

Hmm... if it did it in more gears I would say it could perhaps be rear end whine traveling up the torque tube. Do you have an aftermarket shifter in there?

This is weird. The noise is still there, but it dropped 2 octaves today. WTF.

i might have the same type thing. Mine sounds like an electrical device charging up (like a defibrillator) and gets louder with more rpms. sounds like its coming from /shifter/dash area.

Try the car without your wife/girlfriend in it .... that stopped the whining for me ......

Possible it is some kind of bearing issue ???? Maybe in the area of the clutch/torque tube ????

Try these things to help narrow it down .....

Gearbox in Neutral .... vehicle stopped ..... Clutch pedal pushed to the floor ..... slowly rev engine to RPM where you have heard the whine .... can you hear it ????

YES - the problem is engine and/or flywheel related

NO - next step .....

Gearbox in Neutral .... vehicle stopped ..... Clutch pedal RELEASED ..... slowly rev engine to RPM where you have heard the whine .... can you hear it ????

YES - the problem is in the clutch and/or torque tube.

NO - the problem is probably in the tranny or differential (though your description puts the noise more forward than that) ....

Anyway .... that's what I'd do to start to narrow it down.

Well no noise in either test scenario, so maybe a rear end noise that is traveling up the center of the car. Weird.

Diff is not leaking, maybe it just needs a fluid change.

If you change fluids, I'd start with changing the tranny fluid (since you said the whine seems to change with the gears). If it was in the differential the whine would be based on road speed. Obviously carefully inspect the fluid you drain from the tranny for any signs of a problem (metal particles in the fluid). I'd do just the tranny first, and leave the diff alone. If changing the tranny fluid changes/eliminates the noise, you have a good idea where the problem is. If the noise doesn't change, then try replacing the diff fluid, and see if that alters the noise. Obviosly if it changes the noise, the problem's in the diff, if it doesn't, then you will need to look further into the problem. The good news is you pull the tranny and diff together from the car, so if you have to go that far, both suspect parts come out together.

I have also noticed a "whining" noise during acceleration, but it happens intermittently. Very annoying.

I have been trying to figure out what it is and I'm not sure, it only happens when the wife is in the passenger seat.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I had this problem on my 98. It was very hard to figure out and very irregular. It turned out to be the front wheel bearing on the passenger side.
