Default Help on inner tie rod!

Hey,

I'm trying to replace the inner tie rods on the front. They are pretty worn and loose. The rest of the rack seems ok, and trying to keep costs down on the winter mods

In the GM manual it shows the rack having flats to wrench on:

But no flats on mine??

Do I need a special tool or something??

Thanks,
Matt

Probably on the other side of the rack (at least that's how it was on the last set of tie rods I did... which was a BMW).

You only need one set of flats on the rack, it will hold the other side as well...

Thanks for the response, but I do not think there are any on the drivers side. I looked at it last night, but that was last night LOL, I will take another look just in case it was too late to be working on the Vette

Anyone with exp with the C5?

Just checked, no flats on either side. Anyone??

There is a hole there...If the column is locked, you may not need to worry.

BTW, where did you get your inner tierods, and what did they cost?

Yep, see the hole, but not to be a jerk, but so what? Do I need a special tool or what? Its no where big enough to put any tool I have in it, much less get some torque on it.

I got some from Rockauto.com, 50$ for Moog inner tie rods.

You could just wail on it without a wrench on the rack, and hope the pinion doesn't break...

Hi Matt -

In your picture I can see what appears to be a flat portion on the bulbous piece mentioned in the instructions as item 4.

If truly you do not have flats machined on your parts, maybe they are not factory OEM.

If all else fails, use a good pipe-wrench.

best regards -

Why are you trying to replace the Tie Rods. Isn't all the wear just in the Tie rod end??? I have never seen the tie rod itself wear.

You've obviously never seen an inner tie rod. They have a ball socket that wears out just like the outer can....

turn the gear until you see the rack teeth, thats the flat you use, and its only on one side. dont worry, the teeth are high strength metal

Interesting, I didn't want to grip the teeth. I was thinking of just putting on a large vice grip on the rack and try that... Neither option fills me with a lot of confidence

Yep, the inner tie rods are a ball socket like described above. The outter ones are just a lot more exposed to heat, elements and flying things So, yes the wear out faster. I'm replacing those as well

FYI there are inner tie rods on the rear as well, that IRS thing...

Yep, the item 4 is the new tie rod I was wondering if they were not OEM, as the Vette had a long life before it got to me.

A pipe wrench may be a good idea, my Dad has like a 24 inch one, that should do it LOL

Hi Matt -

Lol - a two-footer might be overkill

The only problem is that the rod will look liked a rat chewed on it!

Since you are replacing them it is not a big deal.

best regards-

Ya, but only one hole, not two...

I have a little over 100k. The tie rod ball joint is pretty loose on some of its motioin. I would not worry if it were only a street Vette, but I'm doing about 5 HPDE type weekends each year. So, I want everything to be in great shape, not just good. I broke down several times last year, and want to avoid that as much as possible
