Default puzzling brake light problem

the two right rear break lights quit working so I pulled the lights out and started testing and found the grounds were good but there was no 12v present (with the brake pedal pressed, of course) until I took both the light bulbs out and then there was 12v, but, it was only floating, meaning, as soon as I connected either bulb it went to 0v. The curious part is that this seems to have happened after I had my car in for a tire change/wheel alignment. I know I can fix this by running a new wire from the left side lights to the right side but I would really like to know why its failed and whether it was the tire shop or just a coincidence. I saw the wiring diagram that Bill Dearborn posted (thanks!) and was wondering if anybody knows where the junction point S490 is within the car?
thanks

Since you have not filled out your sig, and are searching for S490, I can only assume that your car is an export model (Europe or Japan)......is this the case?

I'm in Canada. Was I wrong in reading the diagram that S490 is the junction point for a domestic car?

well, that aside, does anybody know where the junction point is physically located and whether is seems likely somebody working on a wheel alignment could have broken something?

You won't have a splice S490 yours is S492 located 6.5cm left of the RH turn signal breakout. The more likely defect location will be nearer the C400 connector above the diff.

after doing more research and finding a proper schematic, I realized that because the turn signal was still working, the wiring must be good. This pointed to the multifunction lever as being the problem so I took it out and pulled it apart. The actual switch contacts appeared to be ok but the problem seemed to be in the connection between the two halves of the switch. After cleaning everything and putting it all back together everything works but I'll probably still order a replacement just to keep on hand.
