I've got a set of magnesium wheels that I had powder coated black, weights on the inner barrel. No problems, just really careful around curbs.

I don't have any problems running the weights on the inner barrel, and yes be extra careful around curbs.

you have to place them on the inside edge away from the spokes
if they are put by the spokes, they hit the caliper
