Okay guys... I need some help .. I have headers stock air box and a mailer order tune on my 01 Z06.. do I need to get a re-tune if I install a cold air intake.. or will it be fine? Will I notice a difference with a cold air intake ? Thanks guys!!!
no retune necessary for CAI. I went through the idle relearn procedure on my A4, but don't think you need to with your Z. It is simply starting the car and letting it idle for 5 min each gear for the A4.
Which CAI? I have a Vararam, and a tune did make a difference. Find a trusted and well known tuner in your area and ask about it. Also ask other people in the area who have what you have in their car, and get feedback on the tuner too. This is from my own experience.
You will need a tune with any ram air type system, especially since you have headers. You might try contacting the vendor you got the mail order tune from and see if he will adjust it for you.
I hate to say this, but the best thing to do is to get a real tune. You will get more horsepower and a lot better driveability over a mail order tune. Every car is different and you just can't tune for that with a mail order.
There was a thread on here a week or so ago, one of the vendors had a customer with either a mail order tune or a handheld. He told him he could get more power out of the car, and if he didn't, the customer wouldn't have to pay for the tune. He ended up getting 18-20 more horsepower out of it and awesome throttle response. The customer walked away with a shlt eating grin on his face, albeit a little thinner wallet, too.
thank you ,i was afraid of that.any idea how much a custum tune should cost?
Pricing usually fluctuates between $250 and $450.
The PCM will set a code if the amount of air coming in to the car exceeds a certain parameter. You can try installing the intake system and see what happens, it could be that the mail order tune raised these parameters and it will still run ok without throwing a code. Some have problems and some don't. You won't hurt your car unless you hold it at WOT for long periods of time.
I think the Vortex is one of the easiest most reliable cold airs going. A no-brainer to install and nothing to adjust or break. Your tune should be ok as said above . Not like you're ingesting more air IMO BPP has won an awful lot of events with their system.
Vararam, and Callaway Honker seem to be the most popular, and best performance CAIs. You will get some arguments about this, and this is one of the most posted topics on the forum. The Blackwing and the Halltech are much easier to install, but the gains are not the same.BTW, CAI means COLD AIR INTAKE. This means that you must draw air from OUTSIDE the engine compartment. Blackwings, and Halltech draw air from inside the engine compartment. Cold air means more dense air, and a better air/fuel mixture which gives more power. There is so much talk about which does this, and which one does that, it is real confusing.Do a search, talk to people that have them, look at them, and see if you can drive, or go for a ride in cars where the only difference is the CAI, to form your own opinion. My opinion is to get the Vararam, but then again, that's what I have ,so I'm biased.
