Ok here goes, replaced the original radio head unit in the 1998 Pace Car. After replacing the unit with a Pioneer AVIC Z2 the car had a 2 to 4 second delay before the starter would engage. The only thing that is tied into the new radio circuit is an illumination wire off the heater A/C control connector and the VSS wire off the radio connector as well as a Soundgate Bose Adapter for the speaker system. All other connections are off full time 12 volt and accessory power circuits. Has anybody got any ideas as to what the problem could be?
PS: The car was in the shop last week and had a new Body Control Module installed, the starting problem was present before and after the new BCM install.
Modifications to the car
LED Tail Lights
CB Radio
Black Wing Air Filter
Head Up Display
None at this time, dealer cleared all codes. Started it at the dealers and drove it home. I'ts benn raining here in Illinois the past few days so I did not thake the car out. I am going to drive it tonight (and take the cell phone with me) and run the code check when I get back.
since the radio is considered one of the cars 14 computers i would bet that it is vin coded. did the dealer vin code the new radio for you? "no com" is that the radio is not communicating with the rest of the car.
When I put a stock radio from a 2004 in my 1997, radio - no codes.
So I don't think that the Radio No COMM is an issue. Neither is the SDM, probably means you have a different instrument cluster than came with the car though.
Not sure about the following but here goes:
I think SDM is the newer airbag module. Your airbag light would be on, but someone probably moved the bulb to the correct socket for your car.
As for the delay start, it could just be a bad starter solenoid, which is made into the starter on GM cars.
It will likely get worse. Try tapping the starter (if you can reach it) and see if it helps with the delay. If it ever strands you, also try tapping the starter with a wrench. its next to the flywheel right below the pass exhaust manifold rearmost port.
Best access point would be through the front wheel well behind the wheel or through the engine compartment pass side. Not sure if you can reach from either place with car on the ground.

Thanks for all the replies and ideas. The Instrument Cluster was replaced in 1999 with a Head up Display unit the original one was not compatible for Head Up Display. I am going to try a few things this weekend. The first is to check the ground side voltage of the TDR coil and see if as soon as it energizes the car starts with the Ignition Key in the start position or if there is a delay when the key goes to start and the BCM completes the grounding circuit for the TDR coil. This should determine if it is a control circuit problem or some place in the main starter circuit Battery Connections, Solenoid, or Starter.
