Default crank pully bolt

Does anyone know the size of the crank pully bolt. I have a 98, if that matters. I'm planning on swinging past the hardware store on the way home and I forgot to bring my new bolt with me. Originally, I was told that it was like metric but I've been finding that many of my bolts aren't metric, including this one.

not sure exactly what your trying to do, but kind of assuming you are trying to make a device to pull the pulley on. in that case its 16-2 and your best case is just to try to find some threaded rod. i bought 2 big bolts that were 16-2 and welded them together and got creative with washers, nuts, and press tools.

What bolts on a C5 have you found to be SAE? The balancer bolt is indeed metric (M16-2), not sure what your speaking of.........

I'm sorry, I was referring to the socket required to remove it...I think its 13/16 but I don't remember.

I think what fools some folks is that some SAE sizes are so close to some metric sizes, that you can use either an SAE or a metric socket/wrench.

An example is an SAE 15/16 and a 24mm ..... almost dead on identical.

From Machinery's Handbook, the distance across the flats on a 16mm hex bolt is 24mm. This tends to support vettenuts "memory."

Well partner, hate to break this to ya, but the C5 is dimensioned in the metric system. So, in your case, you got a 15/16 to fit, but 24mm is correct. I don't even have SAE tools out when working on my vette, keeps down the confusion.......

Weird, my 24mm fits sloppy on the bolt but the 15/16 fits snug. The edges aren't rounded or anything. The reason why I started this thread was because I had bought a 24mm socket from the guidance of a forum member but when I tried to use it, it seemed too large.

Well, if you think the SAE socket fits better, then use it....no biggie

Then explain the 9/16"-18 shifter shaft thread.

I just took the new bolt down to the hardware store and tested it on both metric and standard sizes. The 15/16 fits the best...its snug. I've actually been finding that a fair amount on my motor, where standard sizes fit better. Wierd...oh well.
