Default I Need a engine wiring harness*@$#%&!!!

Does anyone know where I can get an engine wiring harness without going to the dealer?? I have a 99' w/auto tranny. GM says they made 9 different harnesses for my vette that year, so getting the right one from a junkyard has been hard. Anyone? Beuhler?......Buehler?.....

For a 1999 with automatic (M30) it looks like it should be part number 12189524 - which has a list price of $1,926.51

Call Gene at ...

http://www.gmpartshouse.com

He can verify the part number and help you order it.

Why do you need a engine harnes? Its not a simple swap, the engine harness goes directly to the PCM and the main fuse block, the issue is that the front under hood harness does as well, add in a lot of wires from the cabin and trans it is very hard to tell the engine harness from everything else. You would either have to buy the under hood harness and from the connectors back to the PCM/fuse block or start going wire by wire...

I`d look at repairing it first, you can buy a lot of connectors at rockauto.

Looks like there's three vendors listed on the left side on the page that sell used parts. I'd give them a call. Maybe the parts board from a part out? Google it?

I agree with MattB A lot of times a new harness is your first thought when you have Electrical connector problems. Really though, installing a harness is a lot of work and any subsequent electrical issues that result are maddening to track down.

Can you tell us more about your problem and why you think you need a new harness?

What makes you think you need a new harness ?? When you first posted the question I assumed (stupid mistake on my part) you had a good reason for putting in a whole new harness (such as an engine fire) ... but it is quite possible you don't need a whole harness ... what is the "problem" you are trying to fix ????

Yes I did have an engine fire. Fuel pooled in my intake possibly from a faulty nitrous fuel sylenoid, and exploded. Fuse block and wires are fine along with the pcm, but some of the wires going to the coils, MAF sensor, throttlebody, injectors, altenator, lights, relays, fogs, etc....everything going down the passenger side of the car melted thru. Some wires are so black you can't tell what color they are. Yes I probably do only need a few connectors, but don't know of a source for them. We don't have a 'RockAuto', We have a radioshack? I have seen some connectors on Ebay-Express? What is a source just for these connectors? I guess that would be the easy way I just though I might avoid running down electrical gremlins getting the whole engine harness and splicing it in, but now that seems a pita!

Have you considered a comprehensive claim with your insurance company for the fire?

Oh that's all already taken care of! I get my cake and eat it too!!!

This may be a better direction, I can splice the plugwires in. In my experience ordering from the dealer all plugwires are white, but since the TB has 3 wires coming from it you don't know what colors to splice too! But I have the word out to some guys, C5R 427 and others, maybe someone has a junker they can just cut the wiring off of.....

I have no idea what you are saying .....

I'd recommend you purchase the Service Manuals for your car. They have wiring schematics that show the gauge of a wire ... the color of the wire ... what connectors are used .... whether you rebuild the wiring, or "graft" wiring from another car ... the manuals will be invaluable.

The Service Manuals can be bought from forum vendors such as ...

http://www.gmpartshouse.com

or from the original publisher .....

http://www.helminc.com/helm/homepage.asp?r=

Be certain you purchase the manual for your model year ... wiring changes year to year ....

Thats the first step, no matter what you will need the manuals. It will take a while but it will have all the wiring info you need.

He means that the new connectors do not have the correct color wires on them, mostly because they are not unique to the Vette.

Don`t worry about that, the shop manuals have all the info you need. Every connector is shown with all wiring info.

Sorry, its rockauto.com They have a lot, but not all the connectors. www.ghpartshouse.com can get you anything you need.

I also had an engine fire on the pass side, oil. It scorched about an 8 inch section of the engine harness and the trans harness. The trans harness is fairly cheap, but a new engine harness was $2k. I`m trying to adapt a painless ls6 harness, but would not recommend that. Its for a hot rod, not a Vette. Too much to change, and I`m afraid now that it will cause more problems and I`ll end up buying one from GM anyway.

If it works right now, my suggestion would be:
1 Buy the manuals
2 Keep looking for a used one, look in the parts forum.
3 Save money and buy a new one if it fails before you find a used one.

I would have save a LOT of time, and I`m not done or sure it will work.

Good luck

Remember reading online somewhere recently about a guy that was killed when that happened in April a year or two ago I think. You're lucky it wasn't worse...

Ok, I've scored an engine harness for my year on here for $100!!!! I love this place! And yes I do have the manuals, I'm now building my 5th engine. Accident happened last August, I was in the car in my garage at the time. Cranked it up, let it idle and warm-up, then when I revd the engine alittle, boom! Concussion broke the bracing in the hood so that I couldn't get the hood up, blew a hole in the side of the powerduct and sprayed fuel that burned real good on passenger side, but it stayed contained in the engine bay. Insurance was good to me so along with fixing the damage I'm doing an LSX iron block too.

I had no idea that insurance would pay for something that was so obviously and by your own admission the result of improperly functioning aftermarket equipment that you installed on the car.

No wonder car insurance is so freakin expensive!

As far as I'm concerned you are one VERY lucky guy ... you should have run out and bought a lottery ticket right after this happened ..... most people would have seen the car destroyed by the fire ... the garage destroyed by the fire ... and the house destroyed by the fire .....

The fact you walked away uninjured .... with only some wiring needing replacement .... wow ... again ... you are a lucky guy.

Way to go on that $100 harness! An engine fire is an excellant reason for a new harness.
