What is the normal operating temp for trans fluid? Has anybody ever had the High Trans fluid Temp light come on on the DIC ? any Idea what would cause it.
My A4 temperature,at highway speeds,will usually be 180-185 degrees.
In stop and go traffic,it can sometimes reach 200-210 degrees.
What is your engine coolant temp.when the transmission temp.is high?
If the coolant is in the normal 190-200 degree operating range, your high trans.fluid temps.might be caused by slippage in the clutches or torque converter.Check your fluid level and condition first.
The trans starts sending fluid to the cooler at about 138. The over heating warning does not come on until 255 or 260 something. However, the general consensus is that you want to keep below 210 to 220 as a rule. Since the cooler is in the radiator, the temps will be around the same as your coolant temps, if significantly higher then look in to an additional cooler. Even on the track, if your over those temps then maybe look into an additional cooler.
It won't go catstrophic, unless your drag racing LOL, but high tems shorten the life of the trans. The higher the temp the shorter the life. How much it shortens the life is anybody's guess.
