I have a 2001 coupe that isn't a daily driver. Recently it has developed a problem. Sometimes when I get in the car and turn the key, all the guages and everything comes on and then when I go to start it and turn the key nothing happens. No noise no clicking or anything. I'm thinking its either the starter or something to do with the security system. I'm leaning more towards a security related problem. If I clear the codes it seems to help getting it started. I have one code in history that is security related and that is P1631. The only current code I have is a maf related code because I don't have one. Any suggestions.
Thanks.

Do a search for starting problems. I and others have posted tips several times for the same issue. Could be the connection going to the starter post (loose or burned inside), could be the clutch switch that prevents starting without the clutch depressed, could be the ignition, just read some of the troubleshooting posts and post what you find.
There's one just below yours that starts "no start again,,,," etc on this page.
Usually to start a car you turn the key only a second or so and it should start. Try holding the key until the starter turns. Mine had a delay like that for a while, seems to have gone away. I just needed to hold the key an extra second or so and it would start and run like usual. I thought it was a neutral safety switch issue for a while but that was not it.
I'm pretty sure I noticed the security light flashing when it happened last.
If the security light is flashing, it will prevent the car's engine from turning over. Start with simply cleaning the pellet on the key and/or wiggling the key itself. You may only have a dirty pellet or the ignition switch contacts for the pellet may need replacing. Lots of stuff hanging on the key chain will cause it to wear out faster.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try that next time it happens.

Happened to me again yesterday. The security light was flashing when I turned the key and nothing. When I finally got the car to start it seemed that the fuel shut off was activated and then after a few tries the car started.
I have some time this weekend to due some trouble shooting. Any suggestions on where to start.

If the SECURITY light was on with the key in the START position, the BCM will have stored one or more DTC that will tell you what caused the Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) to disable engine starting.
Post the codes and someone will help you in diagnosing the problem.
Go here for instructions if you're not sure how to display the DTC data ...
I had the same problem with my 98. After cleaning a number of connections and replacing the starter solenoid, I replaced the ignition switch and it fixed the problem.
I had the exact same symptoms with my 02 about a year and a half ago. I replaced the starter (did it myself in about 1-1/2 hours) and that totally fixed the problem
If you have this problem drop the starter and tighten the two small torque socket bolts on the back cover. These bolts secure the brush holder to the starter body and provide a ground. Mine had this problem and from what I was told this is very common on the GM starter. Cheaper than replacing the starter. Car has worked perfect since this was done.

Thanks everyone for all the ideas. It will give me a place to start.
